Below are brief histories about three lighthouses you might not know anything about! St. Joseph North Pier, Morris Island and South Haven Pier Light.

St. Joseph North Pier Photo Credit to: http://www.cyberlights.com

ST. JOSEPH NORTH PIER, MICHIGAN

- Before the towers of St. Joseph North Pier were built, Captain Pickering hung lanterns from his home window to warn passing ships on Lake Michigan to turn inland to head up the St. Joseph River. Captain Pickering’s lanterns lighted the way for ships from 1832 until 1859 when the first lighthouse was erected. This lighthouse was used for 47 years until a new pier light replaced it in 1906. In 1907 a sister light was constructed so that the two beacons could accurately line up with the channel.

MORRIS ISLAND, SOUTH CAROLINA

- The first sentinel on Morris Island was completed in 1876. Sadly, this lighthouse was a casualty of the Civil War. After the war, funds were appropriated for the rebuilding of the lighthouse. Because of the constantly shifting tides, all the buildings around Morris Island Lighthouse have been destroyed. Even so, the lighthouse was automated in 1938 and the first order Fresnel lens was removed. In 1962, the lighthouse was decommissioned due to the fact that the over 1600 feet of land around the lighthouse has been swept away. The lighthouse was due to be destroyed, but local citizens fought to protect it. To this day, it still stands as efforts are still continuing to help save the beacon.

SOUTH HAVEN PIER LIGHT, MICHIGAN

- The Black River in Michigan was the primary source for moving logs to the mill’s at the river’s mouth. The demand was high, so it was important for the area to make improvements to the harbor to make sure business flourished. In 1861, a group of business men decided it was time to make some improvements . Two piers were constructed to protrude out into the lake. The channel between the piers was then dredged to accommodate the many lumber hookers. Then in 1870, the construction of the South Haven Light began. It was an open 30’ wood tower topped by an octagonal cast iron lantern. To protect the keeper from storms and provide a lifeline for the length of the pier, a 75’ long wooden walkway was also constructed. The lighthouse has since been replaced with a prefabricated steel tower and the piers have also been improved. South Haven is still an active aid to navigation today.

Why did we choose the Harbour Town Lighthouse to have our wedding?

Hilton Head Island was the first place we traveled to together after we met. We toured the island and fell in love with it especially Harbour Town and its famous Lighthouse. Two years later after deciding to get married we couldn’t agree on where to have the wedding. Then, like a light bulb coming on over our heads, the Lighthouse came to mind; it was calling us back! Not knowing at that time if the Lighthouse even allowed weddings to be performed, we took a chance and asked. This is when we talked to and eventually met Nadia. She welcomed us with open arms and handled everything from beginning to end! When our special day came Nadia and her staff made it a day that we will never forget!!!

~We return each year to “our Lighthouse” and the same welcoming smiles from our Lighthouse friends.~

15 years ago this May, Maggie and I had the good fortune to be married at the Top of the Harbourtown Lighthouse. (May 20, 1997)

The experience and the memories are still very clear in our minds. It was a glorious day and a beautiful setting. The onlookers were envious of our ceremony taking place at the top.

None of this would have been possible without the help of Nadia and her staff. They were accommodating in allowing us to have exclusive access to the Lighthouse during our ceremony.

Each and every year, Maggie and I return to the scene of the blessed event and are always treated with great joy and enthusiasm. We have brought many a friend to enjoy a glass of champagne as we remember our special day. We have been issued a lifetime pass to the top.

We would definitely recommend this spot for your Wedding day!

Background on Glen McCaskey

Long time Islander Glen McCaskey has been deeply involved in the evolution of Hilton Head as a resort community since moving here in 1970. He was vice president of Sea Pines for the decade founder Charles Fraser grew the company from being the developer of the Sea Pines resort to an internationally respected firm creating industry changing ventures from the Caribbean to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. McCaskey oversaw the environmental and recreational planning, development and management for all company ventures during that period, apart from golf and tennis.

Recently McCaskey has been making some of his Personal Collection photography work available to the public. Never seeking a professional photographer status, some of his images nonetheless ended up on the covers of national magazines and as featured spreads. Particularly enthusiastic about the natural beauty of the Island and the Lowcountry, McCaskey sees most of his images as a “musing and meditating on the love and beauty of our Creator.”

As one who worked along side Charles Fraser in the development of “Fraser’s Folly”, the early epithet given the Harbour Town Lighthouse by detractors who saw it as a needless waste of money, this life-long photographer has made the entirety of his Lighthouse Collection available to the public through the Lighthouse Gift Shop.

On Hilton Head Island he is credited with executing much of the environmental emphasis that has distinguished Sea Pines and Hilton Head Plantation. Having created special private community parks in the Caribbean, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia, on Hilton Head he is best known for creating the Sea Pines Forest Preserve and Heritage Farm, and the Whooping Crane Pond Conservancy and Dolphin Head Park in Hilton Head Plantation. McCaskey also initiated the island’s first bike trail system, which has now spread to around 80-miles throughout Hilton Head.

Glen McCaskey has operated his own Community Visions, LLC for a number of years and has consulted throughout this country and in Mexico, Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Mozambique and South Africa, focusing on a variety of arenas including marketing, issues management, environmental management, tourism, public relations and the recovery of church infrastructure following civil war in Mozambique. McCaskey has also authored several books and numerous articles in various publications.

Glen McCaskey was raised in Williamsburg, Virginia and has degrees from The College of William and Mary, the University of Pennsylvania and the Evangelical Institute of Greenville. Besides Sea Pines Company, he has been in the employ of The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in Virginia, The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, RockResorts, Inc. of New York City, The Kuwait Investment Company, The Denarius Group on Hilton Head and Del Webb Corporation of Phoenix. He has been married to Virginia McCaskey for 42-years and they have two children and two grandsons.
