The original Michigan City lighthouse began operation in 1837 and it was replaced by two story brick dwelling in 1858. In October, 1904, the East Pier Light was added to increase navigation safety and is located at the end of its ?dogleg? pier in Michigan City, Indiana. Its fifth order Fresnel lens, which shone 55 feet above lake level, is now housed in the Lighthouse Museum at the Old Michigan City Lighthouse.
